Info: Evista (ark) - a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that is used mainly for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It works by acting as estrogen in some tissues (bone), interfering with the actions of estrogen in others (breast), and not affecting other ones at all.
EFFECTS :
Raloxifene (Evista) has multiple therapeutic benefits:
- Bone Health: It improves bone mineral density and decreases the risk of fractures in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.
- Cancer Prevention: It reduces the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are at high risk.
- Menopause Relief: Raloxifene can alleviate symptoms like hot flashes during menopause.
- Cholesterol Management: It may improve cholesterol levels, although its impact on reducing cardiovascular event risk is limited.
DOSE AND DURATION OF USE:
The typical dose of Raloxifene (Evista) for managing bone-thinning due to osteoporosis is 60 mg per day, by mouth. Dose is commonly recommended to be taken for 5 years or long as suggested by your healthcare provider. For breast cancer risk reduction, the same of dose of 60 mg/day is used, but with an individual risk-adapted duration of therapy, though limited to a totality of use set by medical advice.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
Common side effects of Raloxifene (Evista) include:
- Hot flashes
- Leg cramps
- Swelling of the legs and feet
- Flu-like symptoms
- Bread seal
- Increased sweating
- Elevated risk of blood clots in the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolism)
COMBINATION WITH OTHER MEDICINES:
While raloxifene is used in standalone treatment, it is not frequently used in therapeutic cycles with other drugs. Most often, it satisfies this first function very well as a SERM for the purposes for which it was developed: preservation of bone density and reduction in breast cancer risk. In order to avoid any potential interactions or side effects, it is also to be taken along with other drugs after consulting with a health care provider.
